What is TIGed?

TIGed is short for TakingITGlobal for Educators, a program that provides rich, interactive global learning experiences by leveraging the resources of the world's most popular online community for youth who want to make a difference.

Perché TIGed?
TIGed allows educators to harness the power of the TakingITGlobal community in a way that fits the needs of their learning environment. More than just a stand alone course management system, TIGed combines an easy-to-use online toolset, or virtual classroom, with collaborative Web 2.0 technologies, global education resources, and hundreds of thousands of global youth leaders in more than 200 countries. Using TIGed, you can connect your students to global perspectives, opportunities for creative expression, and interactive resources to help better engage them in their learning.

Everything on TIGed has been developed with teachers in mind, with help from teachers, and in many cases, began as an idea submitted by our teacher members!

Come si adatta TIGed nella tua classe?
TIGed is flexible to the needs of each classroom. It is designed to support both hybrid (face-to-face and online) learning and exclusive online learning experiences. Teachers are using it in one-to-one computing classrooms as well as in environments where students go online in a computer lab - because each student has a unique login to a protected collaborative space, he or she can participate in TIGed anytime and anywhere there is a computer and internet access. There are even teachers in our community with limited or no internet access in their school, but who access TIGed to connect with other educators and find ideas and resources to use offline with their students.

While TIGed is especially popular at the secondary/middle and high school levels, it is used in classrooms with students as young as grade 2 (ages 7-8), as well as supporting collaborations at the university level and professional learning communities for educators and other youth workers.

TIGed is used across the curriculum to make connections from the classroom to the world, ranging from visual arts to science, service learning to math, social studies to language arts, and for cross-disciplinary projects. The multilingual platform also makes TIG ideal for immersive online language learning.

What does a TIGed license provide?
TIGed membership allows teachers to create their own "virtual classrooms", selecting the tools that are right for their students and projects, including:
  • blogs
  • podcasting tools
  • maps
  • digital image galleries
  • gruppi di discussione
  • writing tools
  • live video chat (premium membership)
  • online file space (premium membership)

TIGed provides opportunities for educators to network and collaborate, through our standards-linked Activities Database of lessons submitted and reviewed by teachers and leading global education organizations, as well as through our projects registry and live online webinars. TIGed also provides games and curriculum units on a range of global issues developed in partnership with other educational organizations.

How did TIGed get started?

During 2004-2005, we collaborated with schools in the Toronto District School Board on pilot projects that tested and refined the uses of TIG's tools and resources for classroom project-based learning. Its initial project was Macklin Public School's Globalize This! Film Festival, in which ten groups of eighth grade students created short films on each section of TIG's Understanding the Issues. Learning from our partnerships with the TDSB as well as the International Society for Technology in Education, with whom we conducted an online research project involving 150 students from around the world, we developed the concept for a new platform, integrated within the TakingITGlobal site, that would enable teachers to engage their students in a safe online classroom environment while still leveraging the global TIG community. In 2005, TIG received a Microsoft US Partners in Learning Mid-Tier Grant, which has funded the development of a new, more powerful, more exciting TIGed.org, which launched in March 2006.

Testimonianze
